OpenMapTiles

This map uses OpenMapTiles, self-hosted by NB Communication.

Advantages

• No usage limits or costs except for the small server instance hosting the tiles, and optional cost to use a CDN to serve the tiles.
• Shows more detail at high zoom level than some other solutions, which can be useful for uses such as estate agency websites.
• Uses vector tiles, which are more efficient than raster (pre-rendered image) tiles, and so maps tend to load faster and can zoom more smoothly.
• The map styling can be customised, eg. using the Maputnik editor.

Disadvantages

• The tiles maps need to be rebuilt periodically to keep them up to date. And the process to do this takes time and is resource intensive.
• Dependent on maintaining the server hosting the tiles.
• NB Communication's map server currently only serves tiles for Britain, Northern Ireland, Norway, and Faroe.
